Planning a Prospective Student Visit

A campus visit offers a unique opportunity to become more familiar with the University, Department, faculty, and current graduate students.
Most applicants find it helpful to plan a visit before they apply for admission (in the fall) or after they have been accepted (in the winter/spring). If admitted for fall, students who are offered a funding package have until April 15 to make a decision, so visits in late winter and early spring are common.
Visitors are required to review our faculty and graduate students’ research interests and submit a list of people they would like to meet during their visit. We will do our best to schedule time with as many people as schedules allow. You can find faculty and student biographies in our directory.
During your visit, you can expect one-on-one meetings with faculty and students. It may be possible to have a group lunch with current graduate students and meet with the Graduate Program Director and/or Department Chairperson. If you have interests outside of geography and have faculty in mind from other Michigan State University departments you would like to meet, we can help coordinate those meetings during the visit.
Once you have a list and visit date(s) in mind, email the Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC) at geograd@msu.edu or call if you have questions, (517) 355-4650. The GPC will assist in coordinating your visit. Visits need to be arranged at least three weeks ahead of arrival.
