Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are essential to academic excellence and our aim is to foster an environment where we value, support, and promote diversity. This means providing equitable access to resources and opportunities to ensure that our department is a place where difference is welcomed and respected and every individual feels a sense of belonging and inclusion.
We are committed to eliminating racism and other forms of discrimination, retaliation, and harassment in our department. We take zero tolerance on racism and discrimination of any type and sexual harassment and misconduct. We support neurodivergent people to learn, study, and work in our department.

Advancing Geography Through Diversity Program (AGTDP) is a nationally recognized program that recruits and provides financial and other support to outstanding Masters and Ph.D. students from key underrepresented groups including African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanic Americans to increase the number and percentage of doctoral degrees awarded to these underrepresented groups. The project's ambitious goal is to diversify the entire field of Geography.
Supporting Women in Geography (SWIG) Group is a supportive group of women students, including women of color, individuals that identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ), and diversely-abled individuals. We organize roundtables and talks per semester. For any department members interested in joining the SWIG group, please contact SWIG President Michelle Bullock at bulloc40@msu.edu or SWIG Faculty Advisor Sue Grady at gradys@msu.edu.
