Nan Jia is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences at Michigan State University and an Associate Professor at Nanjing Agricultural University. Dr. Jia earned a dual-major Ph.D. at MSU in Fisheries and Wildlife and Environmental Science and Policy, an M.S. in Geospatial Information Science from the University of Maryland, and served as a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard University's Center for Geographic Analysis.
Dr. Jia's research develops GeoAI approaches, including deep learning, complex network analysis, and agent-based modeling applied to remote sensing and GIS data, to study human-environment interaction in a metacoupled world. A central theme is evaluating the impacts of multiple shocks, including COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine war, and extreme climate events, as they cascade through global food production and trade systems and reshape urban resilience, inequality, and food security. This work has appeared in Science, Communications Earth & Environment, and Sustainable Cities and Society, and is supported by USDA-NIFA and NSF. Dr. Jia also leads development of the Telecoupling Toolbox.
