Join the MSU Geography Graduate Group (Triple G) on Friday, January 29, 2021, as they kick off their Spring 2021 Colloquium series. The first colloquium session will feature Dr. Lucy R. Hutyra. Dr. Hutyra is an associate professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University and her presentation will focus on the topic of the carbon cycle and urban ecology.

Title: Impacts of Urbanization and Landscape Fragmentation on the Carbon Cycle

Abstract: Forest fragmentation is ubiquitous across urban and rural areas. While there is mounting evidence that forest fragmentation alters the terrestrial carbon cycle, the extent to which differences in ambient growing conditions between urban and rural landscapes mediate forest response to fragmentation and climate remains unexamined. This seminar will explore patterns of landscape change across the Northeastern U.S. and the impacts on forest structure, growth rates, and soil respiration. The effects of fragmentation and urbanization on forest structure and carbon cycling highlight the need to include the influences on both of these facets of land cover change when quantifying regional carbon balance and its response to a changing climate.
