Thu, November 7, 2024 12:00 PM at Main Library, Green Room (4 West)
Mehmet Eroğlu, a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences will be presenting a brown bag talk this Thursday, November 7, at 12:00 p.m. as part of the Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives Brown Bag Series. The talk is entitled “Abandoned by the State: Deindustrialization, Informalization, and Coal Miners' Lives in Zonguldak, Turkey,” and will take place in the Green Room at the Main Library (4 West) and will also be available on Zoom.
This presentation explores the experiences of coal miners living and working in Zonguldak, located in northwestern Turkey. Mehmet investigates how the decline of the formal coal industry since the 1980s has impacted the livelihoods of miners and their families, who have historically depended on this industry. Furthermore, he addresses the rise of informal coal mining in the region and examines how both informal and formal miners shape Zonguldak’s landscape through their interactions with each other, the state, and private companies.
