Emilio F. Moran, a John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University and respected researcher in the natural and social sciences, was recently appointed to the Elsevier Climate Action Advisory Board and will join distinguished international experts in the fields of climate research to accelerate action to address the climate crisis. Dutch academic publishing company Elsevier, a global leader in information and analytics, tapped Moran for his expertise in identifying key challenges and best practices to drive progress on climate change solutions that Elsevier might take to reduce their carbon footprint and influence science-based decisions and the actions needed to address the urgent climate emergency. Moran is the only board member from the United States on the globally diverse board. He believes Elsevier has developed very credible plans to change its global operations in the interest of addressing climate change. Moran agreed to serve because he saw Elsevier as leading an effort in scholarly journals that could spill over and change how other journals operate and even how universities might reduce their carbon footprints.
Dr. Moran joined MSU in January 2013 and is a core faculty member with the Environmental Science and Policy Program, the Center for Global Change and Earth Observations, the Center for System Integration and Sustainability, and the Department of Geography, Environment and Spatial Sciences. He was until 2012 a Distinguished Professor and the James H. Rudy Professor of Anthropology at Indiana University, Professor of Environmental Sciences, Adjunct Professor of Geography, and Director of the Anthropological Center for Training and Research on Global Environmental Change (ACT) at Indiana University.
Dr. Moran is the author of twelve books, sixteen edited volumes, and more than 240 journal articles and book chapters. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for the past three decades. His recent books, Environmental Social Science (Wiley/Blackwell 2010); People and Nature, 2nd edition (Blackwell 2016); and Human Adaptability, 4th edition (Westview 2022), address broad issues of human interaction with the environment under conditions of change. He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London, a Fellow of the American Anthropological Association and the Society for Applied Anthropology, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2010.
