The MSU Department of Geography, Environment and Spatial Sciences offers congratulations to Ph.D. candidate Gabriela Shirkey, who has been sponsored by AmeriFlux to attend FluxCourse. FluxCourse is a two-week early-career workshop focused on the foundations of land-atmosphere flux measurement, modeling, and synthesis. It is held annually at the University of Colorado Mountain Research Station at Niwot Ridge (USA). Gabriela has served as an early-career organizer for both AmeriFlux and FLUXNET, which are partner organizations, and will establish new mentor relationships with leaders in carbon cycle science, remote sensing, and biophysical modeling.
Gabriela is working toward a dual-major Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Science and Policy. Much of her research focuses on developing a framework to estimate net carbon emissions (i.e., global warming potential) at the landscape scale that accounts for carbon sequestration from the landscape and anthropogenic emissions. Additionally, she collaborates outside of MSU on projects in renewable energy, particularly solar energy, within the water-energy nexus framework with a team of international leaders supported by the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC).
Well done, Gabriela!
