Geography Alumnus Spearheads Publication of Online Black Geographers Anthology Database

The Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences at Michigan State University applauds recent Geography alumnus and current Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School Dr. Demetrice "Dee" Jordan for her work in partnership with the American Geographical Society on the publication of a significant resource highlighting Black Geographers. Inspired by Black Geographers in Institutions of Higher Education in the United States: Where They Are and a Selected Bibliography of Their Works, a 2003 report published by Lucía Terra and Dr. Joe Darden, Professor of Geography at MSU for nearly 50 years, the Celebrating Black Geographers Anthology explores stories of early trailblazers in the field from 1900-2000. The anthology also places into context the events occurring at the time when these geographers were matriculating.

Additional cohorts spanning the years of 2001-2010 and 2011-2020 are currently underway. Individuals interested in nominating teachers, lecturers, or professors of African American or Black/African descent, who possess advanced degrees in geography, and who have a demonstrated track record of teaching and research in the discipline of Geography are encouraged to do so.
