MSU Geography Ph.D. Student Earns Award in Asian Studies Paper Competition

Mehmet ErogluThe Department of Geography, Environment and Spatial Sciences offers a hearty congratulations to Ph.D. student Mehmet Eroğlu on receiving an Honorable Mention award in the 2022 Shao Chang Lee Best Paper Competition for a graduate student paper. The competition is sponsored by the Asian Studies Center at MSU.

In conjunction with the Shao Chang Lee Scholarship Fund, the S.C. Lee Best Paper Competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students for papers focusing on Asian topics. Students in any academic discipline may submit a research paper. The paper must focus on an Asian topic or have significant content related to Asia. The Shao Chang Lee Scholarship Fund was established by friends and colleagues of the late Professor Lee to provide scholarship awards for undergraduate students enrolled at MSU who have made outstanding accomplishments in Asian studies and are pursuing or planning to pursue a program that includes Asian studies.

Mehmet joined the Geography Ph.D. program in the Fall of 2021 as a Fulbright Scholar. Prior to arriving at MSU, he received his B.S. in Geomatics Engineering in 2018, and an M.S. in Science, Technology, and Society at Istanbul Technical University in 2020. His winning paper is entitled “The effects of neoliberalism in Turkey on the city of Zonguldak, Turkey's historic center for hard coal extraction.”
