Entrance to Van Buren State ParkThe fieldtrip on Wednesday will be led by Dr. Alan Arbogast (Physical Geographer) to the stunning sand dunes on the shore of Lake Michigan (Van Buren State Park). These dunes collectively represent the largest body of freshwater coastal dunes in the world. Alan will provide a tour and talk about the history of the dunes. Plan to bring your swimsuit and/or plan to relax in the comfortable shaded areas. Snacks and lunch will be provided.

From the lake we will drive north to Fenn Valley Winery to tour and taste Michigan's award winning wines. Late afternoon we will drive northeast to Grand Rapids for dinner at the B.O.B. or other city-center restaurants of your choice. After dinner there will be a Blue's Band playing in the city park. Buses back to East Lansing are scheduled before and after dinner and at 10pm. Taxi services will also be available.

The cost of the field trip is included in the registration fee.

Fieldtrip notes...

  • Please bring a swimsuit and towel. Van Buren State Park has a great swimming beach.
  • Changing rooms will be available.
  • Picnic tables and lounge chairs available in shaded areas.
