E. James Potchen Award in Geography to recognize the “Graduate and Undergraduate Geographer of the Year.”

This award honors one outstanding graduate and one outstanding undergraduate student who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and service to the geography department. The students who deserve the recognition will have shown remarkable professionalism and leadership skills in activities within both the department and the campus community. The students will have been a positive role model for the geography department in activities on campus and the community. The students will have also advocated for geography when interacting with for example university officials, policymakers, and campus organizations. The award is in honor of Dr. E. James Potchen, University Distinguished Professor, Radiology Chairman Emeritus, Professor of Management in the College of Business, Professor of Lyman Briggs College, and Professor of Physiology at Michigan State University. Dr. Potchen is the author of 31 books, and during his tenure at MSU, he has inspired many students and faculty members, as well as setting a positive example of ‘Team MSU.’ The winners of this award will receive a plaque and $1,000.00.

Students interested in being considered for this award must be nominated by a Geography Faculty member. One letter of recommendation (one-page maximum) from an MSU Geography faculty member must be submitted as a PDF attachment to Dr. Gary Schnakenberg (schnake2@msu.edu) by the deadline of Wednesday, March 14, 2018, 5:00 pm. Each interested student should contact a faculty member at least two weeks prior to March 14 to allow that professor enough time to complete this task by March 14.
